Cacti Variety Care
This guide covers common desert cacti in the Cactaceae family. Give them strong light, gritty soil, deep but infrequent watering, and dry air. Christmas, orchid, and other jungle cacti need different care.
- Light
Give desert cacti several hours of bright light or direct sun. Move a new plant into stronger sun gradually so its skin does not scorch. Weak, stretched growth means it needs more light.
- Water
Water thoroughly when the mix has dried at least halfway down the pot, then let every drop drain. Check more often in spring and summer. Water very little in winter unless the cactus starts to shrivel.
- Soil
Use a very free-draining cactus mix with extra grit, pumice, or perlite. Choose a snug pot with a drainage hole. An oversized pot holds wet soil around a small root system for too long.
- Temperature
Keep it warm while it is actively growing and protect it from frost. Most desert cacti tolerate cooler winter nights when kept dry. Keep them away from cold, wet windowsills.
- Humidity
Low household humidity and good ventilation suit desert cacti. Do not mist them or keep them in a closed terrarium, where trapped moisture can lead to rot.
- Common issues
A soft or dark base usually means the roots stayed wet too long. Wrinkling can mean thirst, but check for damaged roots before watering. Pale corky patches can follow sudden sun, cold, or excess humidity. Watch for mealybugs, root mealybugs, scale, and spider mites.

- Identify whether it is a desert or jungle cactus.
- Move a desert cactus into strong light gradually.
- Water only after the mix is dry at least halfway down.
- Empty any saucer after watering.
- Keep it dry and away from cold glass in winter.
- After steady growth begins, separate an offset or root a callused cutting if the species allows it.
