Christmas Cactus

Give it bright, indirect light. An east-facing window is ideal. Strong direct sun can bleach or redden the segments, while very low light can reduce flowering.

Water when the surface of the mix feels dry during active growth and while buds are forming. Soak the mix, then let it drain. During the autumn and post-bloom rest periods, let the top inch dry before watering again, but do not let the whole pot stay bone dry.

Use a loose, well-drained mix that still holds some moisture. Cactus mix amended with fine bark or leaf mold works well. Keep it in a snug pot with a drainage hole.

Keep it around 65 to 70°F during growth and flowering. In early autumn, cooler nights around 55 to 60°F and naturally longer darkness help set buds. Protect it from frost and sudden temperature swings.

Moderate to high humidity suits this jungle cactus. Use a humidifier or pebble tray in a dry room, while keeping enough airflow that the stems and mix do not stay wet.

Bud drop often follows sudden moves, drafts, temperature swings, or overwatering. Limp or shriveled segments can come from dry roots, damaged roots, heat, or harsh sun. Few flowers usually mean the plant missed its cooler, darker autumn rest. Watch for mealybugs and root rot.
