Pothos Care
Pothos is a forgiving trailing or climbing plant with glossy, heart-shaped leaves. Give it bright, indirect light, good drainage, and a little drying time between waterings.
- Light
Give it bright, indirect light. It will tolerate lower light, but growth may slow and variegation may fade. Protect the leaves from harsh direct sun, which can scorch them.
- Water
Let the top inch of potting mix dry before watering. Water thoroughly, then let the pot drain completely. Black leaf edges or yellowing can mean the roots are staying wet.
- Soil
Use a loose, well-draining indoor potting mix. Add perlite or fine orchid bark if the mix holds water for too long, and always use a pot with a drainage hole.
- Temperature
Normal indoor temperatures suit this plant. Keep it away from cold drafts, air-conditioning vents, and frost.
- Humidity
Average indoor humidity is usually enough. Extra humidity can help, but the roots still need to dry slightly between waterings.
- Common issues
Yellow leaves and blackened edges often point to overwatering or poor drainage. Faded variegation can mean the plant needs more light. Bare or leggy vines can be trimmed to encourage fuller growth. Watch for mealybugs and scale.
Care steps
- Give it bright, indirect light.
- Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
- Let the pot drain completely after watering.
- Keep it away from cold drafts.
- Turn the pot and check the vines for pests.
- Trim long vines as needed. Once it is growing well, propagate it from stem cuttings or layering.
